Warning Signs for HVAC Repair

Knowing your HVAC system might need to be repaired or replaced soon is better than being caught off guard. Inevitably, when HVAC systems break, it’s the hottest or the coldest day of the year – because that’s when they’re working the hardest. Watch out for these warning signs you may need to repair or replace your HVAC system:

  • The system is more than 15 years old. The average life expectancy for a gas furnace is 18 years. Energystar.gov recommends replacing furnaces over 15 years old to enjoy 15% more energy efficiency.
  • The heating or cooling bill increases dramatically. Particularly if you’ve had your furnace repaired recently, a sudden increase in the electric bill (compared to years prior, not months) may mean your HVAC system is on its last leg.
  • Strange noises are coming from the system. Rattling, popping, or banging, turning on and off frequently, or blowing cold air is a sign the system may need to be replaced.
  • The home is no longer comfortable. If some rooms are too warm, and others are too cold, or you’re constantly changing the thermostat, the system may not be working properly.
  • The burner flame is yellow or flickering. The burner flame should be blue. If it’s yellow, it could be producing carbon monoxide. If you notice a yellow flame, leave your house immediately and call the gas company to turn your gas off.
